Distracted Driving

The City of Ottawa, through its Safer Roads Ottawa Program, has created a public education campaign entitled, Distractions Impair! Driving requires your full attention, to raise awareness among motorists about the dangers of driving while distracted and to encourage them to change their driving behaviours.

Quick Facts:

  • In Ottawa, between 2006 and 2008, approximately 5,500 collisions were caused by driver inattention, which resulted in eight deaths, almost 1,940 injuries and a social cost estimated at $300 million.
  • A study by the Insurance Bureau of Canada found that experienced drivers are just as likely to get distracted behind the wheel as novice drivers.
  • A study by the University of Carolina Highway Safety Research Center found there are different distractions for different age groups:
    • Younger drivers are more likely to get distracted changing CDs and flipping the radio,
    • Drivers in their 30s are more often distracted by young kids in the car,
    • Older drivers are often distracted by something outside the vehicle.

The Ottawa Police Service would like to remind motorists that GPS devices, cell phones, and even items dangling from your rear view mirrors, can potentially obstruct your view and, in fact, block out persons or other vehicles.  Usually the lower left corner of your windshield is a good area to place your GPS or cell phone mount however, each vehicle is designed differently.  Please be aware of this issue and place your items on your windshield accordingly.

Visit the Traffic Unit page for more information.

Be Safe, Not Sorry. Experienced drivers are just as likely as novice drivers to get distracted behind the wheel.
