A beloved family pet has been returned, thanks to the help of a home security camera and the Ottawa Police Service (OPS).

On February 9, 2021, a family living on a quiet street in the Prince of Wales Drive and Hunt Club Road area, had their Tabby Cat stolen from their front porch.

A man was seen on the home security camera taking the family pet and leaving in a Nissan Versa. The family reached out on many social media platforms in attempts to recover their stolen cat. Local newspapers took hold of the story and shared a video of the culprit.

An OPS Detective opened an investigation after the family made a police report. Information obtained from the video and neighbours led to the identification of the suspect, who was working for a delivery company. Investigators met with the cat-napper at his residence, on April 3rd, and recovered “Sunny” who was safe and healthy.

No charges were laid.

“The cat was returned to the jubilant owners” said S/Sgt. Jamie Aldrich of the West Criminal Investigations Unit. “Residents are always encouraged to call police about suspicious activity, or suspicious persons. Neighbours helping Neighbours.”
