The Homicide Unit is dedicated to investigating:

  • Homicides;
  • All occurrences suspected to be homicide involving found human remains; and,
  • All missing person occurrences where circumstances indicate a strong possibility of foul play.

The Unit also reviews and investigates Cold Case files and assists with other non-major case files when required.

Duties of the Unit:

  • Prepare court briefs and assist the Ottawa Crown Attorney’s Office in the prosecution of homicides cases.

  • Prepare and execute Judicial Authorizations.

  • Assist victims of crime and their families.

  • Remain current on case law, charter issues, or other matters arising from the  courts which impact on major case investigations. 

The Homicide Unit is committed to developing and maintaining an open and cooperative working relationships within the community on matters related to all Major Crime.

At a press conference in 2011, the Ottawa Police announced details of a new Public Rewards Policy, which enables the Ottawa Police Service to offer monetary rewards of up to $50,000 for information leading to arrests and convictions in unsolved files.
