Anyone requesting a background check for adoption purposes must:
The Children's Aid Society and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services requests that individuals applying to adopt a child, obtain a list of occurrences that you have been involved in, or a letter indicating that there has been no police contact for the past five (5) years.
If you have lived outside the jurisdiction of Ottawa within the last five (5) years, please contact the police agency in that area to receive instructions on how to obtain a list of occurrences through their records.
Fingerprints are required for all adoption requests and are submitted to the RCMP who will conduct the appropriate database searches. These searches include pardoned sex offences and record suspensions for each applicant.
This includes the completed Criminal Records Check and list of police occurrences.
This is an additional fee for the Ottawa Police Service to complete your fingerprints to submit with the adoption application.

You must apply in person at 2670 Queensview Drive for adoption applications. At this location, you will:
Hours are Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 3 pm. This location is closed on all statutory and civic holidays, including Remembrance Day.
No appointment necessary. Clients are served on a first come, first served basis.
It may take up to seven (7) to ten (10) days for your Criminal Records Check and List of Occurences to be completed.
There can be a delay in waiting for the results of fingerprints to arrive from the RCMP.
Once the fingerprint results have been received from the RCMP, the Background Clearance Section will notify you that your requirements for your adoption application with the Ottawa Police Service have been completed.
