Info for Media and Journalism Students

Media Relations staff is pleased to assist journalism students who require information or interviews from the Ottawa Police Service (OPS). Please note that due to high volume and demand, the Media Relations Section will re-direct all students to the OPS website when inquiring about data already available online. So check the website first!

The following information is available on the OPS website:

Please note the following conditions prior to requesting information or interviews:

  • Last minute requests cannot be accommodated. The earlier you put in your request, the more likely you will be to get the information you need and/or the opportunity to speak with an OPS officer or subject matter expert. So plan ahead.

  • In fact, expect from 24 to 72 hours as the turnaround time by Ottawa Police with your media request.

  • All information released by OPS will be done in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

  • The OPS cannot provide information on matters before the courts.

  • The OPS can only speak to issues that fall under the mandate and jurisdiction of the Ottawa Police Service.

  • The OPS will not provide opinions or positions regarding current legislation or proposed changes to legislation.

  • The OPS will not provide opinions regarding investigations, policies and activities of other police services or organizations.

  • We invite students to consider other sources of information such as community groups, Government bodies (city, provincial and federal) and subject experts.

  • For statistics related requests, ensure that you have checked available data/statistics.

  • Be prepared to identify what information you are looking for and have a list of key questions ready. You should note that local reporters typically have about 10 minutes to interview an OPS officer or subject matter expert. You will have the same time restrictions as local reporters do. We strongly urge you to make good use of your scheduled interview time.

  • Please utilize the Media Relations Section staff to arrange interviews on your behalf rather than contacting investigators and subject matters experts directly.
