Community Safety and Wellness Model

MERIT (Multiagency Early Risk Intervention Tables) is an innovative community safety and well-being Initiative supported by the Ottawa Police Service that aims to reduce risk and victimization and improve community resiliency and well-being.

MERIT takes shape as a hub platform, bringing community agencies together in a situation table model to provide targeted, wraparound interventions to individuals, families and places that are experiencing acutely elevated levels of risk of harm.

MERIT provides backbone support to local partners. This includes coordination, administration and the development of tools aimed at strengthening service delivery across sectors.

MERIT supports identification of trends, gaps, system level barriers and best practices in human service delivery systems for vulnerable and at-risk populations.

MERIT is also the home of the Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE) Project for the Ottawa Police Service. The integration of a P/CVE component into MERIT is aimed at increasing awareness and responsiveness to radicalization across the spectrum, and community resilience against violent extremism. The program is hyper local and its objectives are to establish front-line awareness and community and civic capacity to intervene to reduce risk, victimization, and criminality associated with violent extremism.

The Ottawa Police Service is dedicated to supporting this network that has representation from community partners from the health, education, social, and safety services sectors. MERIT represents a continued commitment on the part of the Ottawa Police Service to working with our communities on our shared responsibility for safety, and to expand and enhance how the OPS works with community organizations to address risk factors that may lead to harm or victimization.
