Man Charged in Early Morning Ottawa Auto Theft

(Ottawa) – The Central District Investigations Unit has charged a man with several auto theft-related offences in relation to an incident in the early morning hours on August 22nd.
At about 4:00 a.m., patrol officers were called to the Booth Street and Spruce Street area regarding a vehicle theft in progress. Officers located a vehicle associated to theft and a traffic stop was conducted on Albert Street. The driver was found to be in possession of tools used to complete the theft.
Deric METHOT, 20-years-old, from Montreal, was charged with:
- Theft of a motor vehicle
- Possess break-in instruments
- Conspiracy to commit an indictable offence
- Fail to comply with release order
- Operating a motor vehicle on a highway – no insurance
METHOT is accused of similar auto theft charges out of Laval, Quebec. He appeared in court on August 22nd.
The OPS would like to remind residents to take precautions to protect their vehicles. Vehicle thefts happen fast, often overnight, leaving the owner unaware until hours later.
