Car rallies are a very popular activity for graduating students as a means to raise funds for graduation, however, these activities are unsanctioned by the schools and often involve dangerous and criminal activity.
Officers are taking a Zero Tolerance approach to incidents that contravene either Municipal, Provincial or Federal statutes. Patrol officers, District officers and Investigators will be conducting enforcement and will fully investigate any incidents that are related to car rallies. Charges will be laid where applicable.
OPS wants you to be aware of the consequences under the Criminal Code, Highway Traffic Act, Parental responsibility Act and Insurance repercussions if you are stopped by police or worse, involved in an accident while taking part. Any and all provincial and municipal statutes will be considered when charges are pursued.
Officers responding to these calls are making every effort to contact parents if youth are under 18. Parents may be asked to attend the scene to collect their child.
These rallies are a drain on police, fire and paramedic resources and tie up emergency workers for significant lengths of time, keeping them from attending potentially more pressing calls for service at peak times.
If you are aware of an upcoming car rally and wish to advise police, consider anonymously reporting it via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.crimestoppers.ca.
