The Ottawa Police Service has been advising women to exercise caution in light of a potential pattern of homicides involving sex trade workers in the City of Ottawa.

We are here to help you:

Working in the sex trade can make you a vulnerable target, and predators count on the fact that you may not report crimes against you. If you have been a victim of a crime, or you wish to provide information on suspicious persons or incidents we encourage you to contact the police, use our anonymous Bad Date LineCrime Stoppers, any of the community resources below or tell someone you trust who can help you.

We encourage all victims of crime to report any incident. Remember, you can always ask to speak to someone discretely if you want to report an incident of a sensitive, personal nature. If you wish to speak with an officer regarding an assault or receive more information regarding the investigation process, you may contact the Sexual Assault Unit directly at 613-236-1222, ext. 5944.

Be vigilant for your personal safety by exercising good safety practices, such as:

  • Being aware of your surroundings and avoiding isolated areas.
  • Trusting your instincts when you don't feel safe.
  • Letting someone know if you must leave the area.Women talking to "Johns"
  • Taking more time than usual before getting into a vehicle.
  • Trying to work in teams so someone knows what vehicle you get in.
  • Keeping a cell phone and making sure it's charged and has minutes on it.
  • Having a personal safety plan prepared should a dangerous situation arise.
  • Reporting bad dates immediately to police, or to someone you trust.
  • Checking in regularly with people you know, so they know you are okay.
  • Be Aware of Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault. It could help prevent a tragedy.
