Agent Status

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is dedicated to serving and protecting the residents of Ottawa.

In the fall of 2020, as part of our proactive policing measures, we launched our Agent Status program. This program grants the OPS the authority to prohibit entry to premises or property, and when necessary remove, any persons from a premises under the Trespass to Property Act. Any business owner, manager or authorized person can sign up for the program using our online form and emailing the completed form to AgentStatus@ottawapolice.ca. This authority includes dealing with any person who has been verbally warned, or given a letter in writing, prohibiting entry to a property.

If you are a business owner, landlord or property manager of a multi-unit residential building, you can sign up for the program by filling out this form and emailing it to AgentStatus@ottawapolice.ca. An officer will visit you and further explain the benefits of the program, and also offer you an “Agent” status sticker to place at the entrance of your building. The sticker will provide visual identification to our officers that your building is part of the Agent Status program and that they can enter to conduct proactive patrols. If you would like to provide OPS with access to your building, by creating and sharing an emergency access code, please do so by completing the Emergency Access Authorization Form, which is an additional form for buildings with specific access codes for entry.

Please note that granting the OPS Agent Status does not necessarily mean that regular patrols will occur. Such patrols can only be done depending on the call volume we receive and our available resources. Property owners and managers are still encouraged to call us by dialing 911 during an emergency when a mobile response is required.

If you are a tenant in a building where you feel you could benefit from the Agent Status program, please talk with your landlord about signing up.

If you have questions about the program, you can contact your local Community Police Officer.
