(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service (OPS), Safer Roads Ottawa, the OPP and RCMP are calling on all road users to be safe and share the road as we head into the weekend.

Since August 17th, there have been a total of seven serious collisions in our City, involving a total of 11 people including motorists, passengers, cyclists and a pedestrian. These incidents resulted in five deaths and four people who suffered serious life-altering injuries.

Multiple enforcement projects are in effect in Ottawa including OPS Operation #NoiseMaker which translated into over 1100 speeding charges laid against drivers since early May.

Furthermore, since January 1st, OPS has laid 402 charges against drivers for impairment by alcohol or drugs. That represents approximately 50 incidents per month.

This year, the RCMP NCR Traffic Services laid over 3300 charges, including 2800 for speeding, 30 for stunt driving and 8 impairment-related charges.

Your driving behaviour is a key contributing factor:

  • Think safety first
  • Seatbelts save lives
  • Drive sober
  • Cut out distractions
  • Respect the speed limits
  • Drive defensively and be alert
  • Be aware of your surroundings

Please report erratic or impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.  Other Traffic safety complaints can be made online.
