Charges laid in a hate filled disturbance

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Hate and Bias Crime Unit has charged an individual following a disturbance at a commercial retail establishment in the 700 block of Silver Seven Drive on September 13, 2023.
At approximately 2:30 pm, while interacting with a store employee, the individual became belligerent, uttering racial slurs directed towards the employee along with making lewd gestures.
Joey JOHNSON-DESORMEAUX, a 43-year-old male of Ottawa, has been identified and charged with harassment by threatening conduct and causing a disturbance, both hate related.
He will appear in court at a later date.
We continue to encourage anyone who witnesses or experiences such incidents to report them to police. Reporting hate-motivated incidents is an important step in stopping cycles of hatred.
