Marine Dive and Trails

The Ottawa Police Marine, Dive and Trails (MDT) Unit patrols the vast waterways and trail systems in the Ottawa area.

In an emergency, every minute counts. Our MDT Unit is staffed with police officers trained to use boats, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles to access people in remote locations.

The Ottawa Police Traffic Services Unit is dedicated to improving safety on an enormous amount of rural roads and urban streets.

In the warmer months, MDT patrols waterways to educate people on water safety and boating regulations and conduct speed enforcement.

They are certified divers who, sadly, search for missing or drowned people. They are also trained to investigate water-related incidents involving a sudden death, post-mortem physiology, skeletal remains recovery, weapons recovery and preservation, as well as other incidents involving water, which could include plane crashes.

During the colder months, you will find MDT officers on many trails in our area doing education and enforcement with drivers of off-road vehicles and snowmobiles.
