2025 Hate Crime statistics show a 23% decrease in reported incidents
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, February 3, 2026 9:30 a.m.
(Ottawa)— The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) 2025 Annual statistics show 358 incidents reported to the Hate and Bias Crime Unit, representing a decrease of approximately 23% compared to 2024, with 467 reported incidents.
Among the reported incidents, 263 were classified as criminal offences, and 95 as hate-motivated incidents.
Fifty people were charged with a total of 163 offences. Four youths were charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The most serious violations in 2025 were:
- Mischief to property
- Threats
- Assault
- Harassing communication
- Assault Causing Bodily Harm
- Assault with a weapon
The most victimized groups* are:
- Jewish (73 reported incidents)
- Black (51 reported incidents)
- LGBTQ2+ (26 reported incidents)
- Muslim (18 reported incidents)
*Note: the groups listed above are established and defined by Statistics Canada.
Hate crimes can be underreported. We encourage anyone who has experienced a hate incident to report it to us for further investigation.
