CAMSafe Supports Distraction Theft Investigation
A woman was approached by occupants of a vehicle asking for directions. Wanting to help, she took a moment to point them in the right direction. One of the passengers stepped out to thank her.
What happened next took only seconds.
The suspect placed a bracelet in the woman’s hand as a “thank you gift”, but in that same moment, skillfully removed her wedding band and engagement ring. Before she realized what had happened, the suspect was back in the vehicle and gone.
A distraction theft.
During the investigation, a Special Constable turned to the CAMSafe database. Within minutes, they identified a nearby resident who had voluntarily registered their camera. Just 20 minutes after reaching out, the person had replied to the police and received instructions to upload video footage from the exact time of the incident.
Thanks to CAMSafe, investigators were able to advance the investigation more quickly. Whether it leads to charges or not, timely access to video plays a critical role in identifying suspects and helping bring cases to resolution.
CAMSafe is a voluntary database that stores contact information only. There is no access to live footage through CAMSafe.
If you have surveillance on your property and want to help police if a crime occurs in your camera view, register on camsafe.ca. You could play a crucial role in an investigation.
