Commercial vehicle safety blitz takes 27 vehicles off the road
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, July 15, 2026 1:45 p.m.
(Ottawa) –The Ottawa Police Service (OPS), alongside the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), and conducted a joint commercial vehicle safety blitz in Ottawa’s west end on July 13.
CVSA-qualified inspectors from MTO, OPP and OPS conducted mechanical safety inspections on heavy commercial vehicles, with support from several OPS units, including West District Traffic, the Road Safety Unit, Marine, Dive & Trails Unit, Impaired Countermeasures & Impounded Vehicles Unit.
In total, officers brought more than 60 trucks in for inspection.
The enforcement initiative resulted in:
- 67 inspections conducted
- 27 vehicles taken off the road
- 38 charges laid
- 1 licence plate removed
- 2 suspended drivers identified
Deficiencies were found related to brakes, steering components, lamps, tires, wheels, hubs, load security, driver logs and driver licensing.
Charges included offences related to annual inspections, daily inspection reports, expired or missing Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration certificates, Tow and Storage Safety and Enforcement Act violations, vehicle emissions, load security, overweight vehicles, improper tires, improper brakes, and permit or plate issues.
Two drivers were also found to be driving while suspended, including one driver from Nova Scotia.
Commercial vehicle safety inspections are an important part of keeping Ottawa roads safe. Vehicles that are not properly maintained, overloaded, or operated by unlicensed or suspended drivers pose a serious risk to everyone on the road.
The OPS thanks its MTO and OPP partners for their continued collaboration and commitment to road safety.
