Community Policing Unit Shares Back-to-School Safety Tips
With the school year underway, the Ottawa Police Service’s Community Policing Unit is helping students and families stay safe with some practical reminders.
“We want kids to feel confident and safe as they make their way to school each day,” said Sergeant Stéphane Fournier. “That means simple steps like walking with a friend, staying alert, and always using crosswalks.”
Sergeant Sébastien Lemay added that safety on the school bus is just as important. “Wait in a safe spot away from traffic, always cross in front of the bus so the driver can see you, and remember to stay seated and follow the driver’s instructions.”
The officers also reminded students to learn their route, share it with a parent or guardian, and speak up if they see unsafe behaviour or bullying. “Trust your instincts,” Sergeant Lemay noted. “If something doesn’t feel right, find a safe place and ask for help.”
To make these reminders easy to remember, the Community Policing Unit created a short video– a quick way to refresh important safety habits at the start of the school year.
