Crime Prevention Week: East District Officers Share Tips to Keep Your Valuables Safe
The Ottawa Police Service East District Community Policing Team is connecting with residents across the community to promote crime prevention and share practical safety tips.
Officers were at the Walmart on Innes Road speaking with shoppers about how to prevent theft from vehicles. As part of the initiative, officers distributed “All Valuables Removed” reminder cards and discussed simple, effective steps residents can take to help reduce the risk of being targeted.
Tips to help prevent theft from your vehicle:
-
Remove all valuables, including bags, electronics, loose change, and garage door openers.
-
Always lock your doors and close your windows, even if stepping away for a short time.
-
Park in well-lit, busy areas whenever possible.
-
Never leave your vehicle running and unattended.
-
Hide charging cables, mounts, or any signs that valuables may be inside.
-
Consider installing motion-activated lighting or security cameras if parking at home.
-
Report suspicious activity to police.
Crime prevention is most effective when we work together. If you see East District officers in your neighbourhood this week, take a moment to stop by, ask questions, and learn more about how you can help keep your community safe.
