Cst. Naziri Partners with Capital Prosperity Foundation to Help New Mom
The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) serves the community every single day seeing firsthand where help is needed.
The Capital Prosperity Foundation partnered with OPS to identify families in need that they can impact through their foundation by providing food, furniture, household necessities and more.
When Cst. Walid Naziri responded to a call where he identified a family in need, he quickly turned to CPF for help. “We attended a residence where a mother resides with her 3-year-old child and 1 month-old baby,” said Cst. Naziri. “I quickly noticed the empty apartment with barely any furniture, and a mattress on the floor.”
When looking through the apartment, Cst. Naziri noticed there was also a shortage of food in the refrigerator. “I immediately contacted my staff sergeant to see if we could get her a gift card for groceries,” Cst. Naziri explained.
According to the Ottawa Food Bank’s Hunger Report, 1 in 4 Ottawa households faced food insecurity in 2023—up from 1 in 7 in 2022. The food bank is seeing a 90 per cent increase in visits compared to five years ago.
“I was able to personally deliver the gift cards [which were used] for food.” The CPF and OPS, once again, brought relief to a family in need and helped a mom put food on the table. “She was crying, she was really happy,” described Naziri.
Familiar with the Make Your House a Home program through CPF, Cst. Naziri looked into getting them furniture. “The mom was sharing the mattress with her toddler and new baby, and I was hoping to set them up with something safer.”
The Capital Prosperity Foundation and OPS acquired a toddler bed, mattress and sheets, as well as a crib, for this family. And Cst. Naziri went above and beyond. “I have two young kids,” he shared. “So I made a bag of toys from my own house to bring to them next time I go by to check on them.”
Officers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with CPF programs and identify families in need in the community so that they, along with OPS and officers like Walid Naziri, can come together and make a positive impact in their life.
