East District Community Policing at Costco Cyrville for Crime Prevention Week

As part of Crime Prevention Week, our East District Community Policing team were at Costco on Cyrville Road to speak with patrons about distraction thefts, a crime that has seen a recent rise in complaints in our community.

What Are Distraction Thefts?

Distraction thefts occur when offenders use distraction techniques to steal valuables. These incidents often happen in parking lots or public spaces.

Common tactics include:

  • Approaching victims with elaborate stories, such as offering gold or jewelry in exchange for money.

  • Using fake jewelry as collateral or as a “gift.”

  • Creating a scene or asking for help while in close physical proximity, then stealing real jewelry, wallets, or other valuables.

  • Sometimes working in pairs—one distracts while the other steals.

"These crimes exploit human kindness and attention," explained Sgt. Stephane Lemay. "It makes them hard to detect until it’s too late."

Top 10 Tips to Prevent Personal Theft

  1. Stay alert – Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

  2. Secure your belongings – Use bags with zippers and keep them in front of you.

  3. Avoid flashiness – Don’t openly display expensive items like jewelry or gadgets.

  4. Beware of strangers – Be cautious if someone offers help or creates a scene.

  5. Split your valuables – Don’t keep all your cash and cards in one place.

  6. Distrust distractions – If someone bumps into you or spills something, check your belongings immediately.

  7. Secure technology – Keep a firm grip on phones and avoid leaving them on tables.

  8. Keep bags closed – Regularly check that pockets and bags are secure.

  9. Trust your instincts – If something feels off, move away.

  10. Stay informed – Know local safety tips when traveling.

Let’s continue to work together to keep our community safe.
