Helping Local Kids Start the School Year Right
Yesterday marked a truly inspiring day for our Community Youth Unit as we joined hands with the Caring and Sharing Exchange at the bustling Carlingwood Shopping Centre for their annual Backpack Packing Event. This isn’t just any event — it’s a powerful community effort that brings together volunteers from every corner of our city, united by a common goal: to ensure that every child starts the school year ready to learn and thrive.
As we gathered, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of purpose and hope. Volunteers sorted through piles of brightly colored backpacks and carefully packed them with school supplies tailored for students from Kindergarten all the way to Grade 9. From pencils and notebooks to rulers and glue sticks, every item was thoughtfully included to give kids the tools they need to succeed.
Together, we packed backpacks for over 6,400 children — an incredible number that speaks to the dedication of the Caring and Sharing Exchange and the generosity of our community. Yet, even with this massive effort, we learned there are still more than 700 students on the waitlist, a sobering reminder of how vital this program is and how much more work lies ahead.
Being part of this event reminded us of the strength found in community collaboration. It’s not just about the backpacks; it’s about showing these children that they are seen, valued, and supported. It’s about planting seeds of confidence and opportunity in every child’s heart, so they can walk into their classrooms with heads held high, ready to take on new challenges.
We are proud to stand alongside the Caring and Sharing Exchange and so many compassionate volunteers who make this event possible each year. Together, we are weaving a safety net of support and kindness that reaches far beyond the school supplies — it reaches into the future of every child who receives these backpacks.
Thank you to the Caring and Sharing Exchange for welcoming us into this meaningful initiative. We look forward to continuing this partnership and helping build a stronger, more caring community — one backpack at a time.
