Historic First Indigenous Recruiting Forum Brings Community, Culture, and Conversation Together

The first-ever Indigenous Recruiting Forum made history this week, bringing together participants from across the region both online and in person for two evenings of meaningful connection, cultural celebration, and career inspiration.

Hosted by the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) in partnership with the Anishinabek Police Service (APS), the event marked a major step forward in strengthening Indigenous representation within policing and building pathways for future recruits.

From the opening ceremony and traditional music to the engaging discussions led by speakers, recruiters, and panelists, the forum created a space where community and opportunity came together. Attendees had the chance to hear first-hand experiences, learn about the police application process, and explore the many ways to begin a meaningful career in law enforcement.

“This event was more than a recruiting initiative,” said Sgt. Jennifer Richardson of the Ottawa Police Service’s Recruiting team. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us, shared their voice and help strengthen the future of Indigenous representation in policing.”

For those who missed the Online Information Session with APS and OPS on the police application process, the full recording will be available soon within the OPS Indigenous Mentorship Community under the Classroom area.

The OPS Indigenous Mentorship Community is a free online space designed to support and empower those interested in policing careers, offering access to:

  • Upcoming events and training opportunities
  • Resources and session recordings
  •  Direct connections with mentors and recruiters
  • Guidance and best practices for starting a policing career

Whether you’re Indigenous, work within Indigenous communities, or aspire to serve alongside them, this community is a place to grow, learn, and connect.

“We’re just getting started," Sgt. Richardson said. "And we’re so grateful to everyone who’s joining us on this journey. Miigwetch. Thank you for helping us build a stronger, more inclusive future together.”
