Honouring Extraordinary Courage: OPS Officers Awarded the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery
The Ottawa Police Service proudly celebrated four of its members who received the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery—one of the province’s highest honours for acts of valour. Presented by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and the Solicitor General, the medal recognizes officers who have demonstrated exceptional courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to public safety in the face of danger.
Constables Kyle Lamothe, Samson Vo, Paddye Magill, and Patrick Wiseman were formally recognized for heroic actions carried out during two separate high-risk incidents in 2023 and 2024. Acting Superintendent Dikah attended the ceremony in Toronto alongside the officers and their families, representing the Ottawa Police Service with immense pride.
Cst. Lamothe and Cst. Vo: Running Toward Gunfire in Centretown
On the evening of November 6, 2023, Constables Kyle Lamothe and Samson Vo were patrolling Centretown when they came across a group of four individuals—two of whom were known to be associated with an emerging street gang. Without warning, one man pulled out a pistol and fired five shots, striking another person in the shoulder.
What followed was a split-second test of courage.
Lamothe immediately exited the cruiser and ran toward the gunfire, identifying the shooter and pursuing him on foot through a chaotic, dangerous scene. He was able to close the distance, safely apprehending and arresting the armed suspect.
At the same time, Vo pursued a second man who had fled. Not knowing which suspect held the firearm, Vo confronted the individual at gunpoint and made the arrest, placing himself directly in harm’s way.
Their swift, decisive actions stopped an active shooter, prevented further injury, and protected members of the public who were just steps away from violence.
Cst. Magill and Cst. Wiseman: Courage Under Fire in Carlington
On March 22, 2024, Constables Paddye Magill and Patrick Wiseman were patrolling the Carlington neighbourhood when a suspicious vehicle sped past at dangerously high speeds. A brief pursuit followed, ending when the vehicle hit a curb, went airborne, and crashed to a stop.
The suspect then fled on foot, armed.
Wiseman gave chase through a busy area filled with pedestrians, repeatedly ordering the suspect to drop the firearm. When the suspect turned and pointed the gun at both officers, Wiseman discharged his firearm, stopping the immediate threat and preventing potential harm to nearby residents.
Magill immediately shifted to lifesaving mode, providing urgent first aid to the injured suspect and then securing the final arrest. Both officers demonstrated remarkable composure and bravery while under direct threat.
A Proud Moment for OPS
The heroic actions of these four officers represent the highest ideals of policing: bravery, quick thinking, and a steadfast commitment to protecting the community, often at great personal risk.
We congratulate Constables Lamothe, Vo, Magill, and Wiseman on receiving the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery. Their actions embody the courage and professionalism we strive for every day.
