Joint OPS and OPP traffic enforcement results in 77 charges during Canada Road Safety Week
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, May 19, 2026 3:05 p.m.
(Ottawa) — On the evening of Friday, May 15, members of the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) Traffic Units and Air Support Unit joined officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) for a coordinated traffic enforcement initiative across Ottawa as part of the #ResidentsMatter campaign and Canada Road Safety Week.
The operation focused on high-risk driving behaviours, including excessive speeding, stunt driving, impaired driving, distracted driving, and unsafe vehicle modifications. Officers also monitored several known vehicle gathering locations throughout the evening.
In total, OPS and OPP officers laid 77 charges and impounded seven vehicles, including six linked to stunt driving offences and one connected to an impaired driving investigation.
Officers issued:
- 65 Part I Provincial Offence Notices
- 10 Part III summonses (mandatory court appearance)
- 2 Criminal Code charges
Charges included:
- Speeding
- Careless driving
- Distracted driving
- Obstructed licence plates
- Unlicensed driving
- Improper mufflers
- Vehicle equipment violations
- Red light offences
Several drivers were charged with stunt driving after being stopped at excessive speeds, including:
- 112 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Greenbank Road
- 137 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Greenbank Road
- 150 km/h in a 100 km/h on Highway 417 near Kanata Avenue
- 152 km/h in a 100 km/h on Highway 416 near West Hunt Club
- 162 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 417 near Eagleson Road
- 163 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 417 near Riverside Drive
During one traffic stop near Alert Road and Thad Johnson Private, officers stopped a driver for equipment violations. Following a mandatory alcohol screening demand, the driver was arrested and charged with impaired driving and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit.
High-risk driving behaviours continue to put everyone on our roads at risk. Operations like this are about keeping roads safe for all users through both enforcement and visibility. Whether you’re driving, riding, cycling, or walking, we all have a role to play in road safety.
Drivers are reminded that stunt driving, impaired driving, distracted driving, and aggressive driving carry significant penalties and can have devastating consequences.
The OPP and OPS will continue to work together throughout the year on traffic enforcement projects.
Anyone who witnesses dangerous driving behaviour is encouraged to report it to police when it is safe to do so.
