Market safety initiative continues in ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau: July 17-18
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, July 20, 2026 12:30 p.m.
(Ottawa) –The Ottawa Police Service (OPS), together with City of Ottawa enforcement partners, continued targeted safety and enforcement activities in the ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau area on Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18.
Throughout the weekend, officers maintained a visible presence, conducted proactive patrols and engaged with residents, visitors and businesses.
The initiative resulted in:
- 24 alcohol interventions
- 16 licensed establishment walkthroughs
- 18 public interactions
- four traffic stops
- 14 by-law infractions
- six parking tickets
- 15 by-law warnings
- three Provincial Offence Notices issued under the Trespass to Property Act
- one arrest
The arrest involved a man wanted in connection with an impersonation offence and alleged breaches of release conditions. A vehicle associated with the accused was also seized for further investigation.
During one licensed establishment walkthrough, officers removed an individual from the premises.
OPS will continue working with City and provincial enforcement partners throughout the summer to support a safe environment for residents, visitors, businesses and frontline workers in the ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau area.
The Market Safety Initiative focuses on visible police presence, proactive enforcement, public engagement and collaboration with community and enforcement partners to address crime and disorder in the area.
