Ottawa Police at the FME Breakfast of Champions
At the historic Fairmont Château Laurier, overlooking the Rideau Canal, data professionals from across Ottawa gathered on March 24, 2026, for the FME Breakfast of Champions—a morning dedicated to innovation, collaboration, and the power of data.
The event brought together analysts, developers, and public sector leaders to connect with Safe Software experts and explore real-world solutions to complex data challenges.
Among the attendees was Ottawa Police Service’s senior geospatial data analyst, Anastasia Kurbakovskaya, who shared how data can be transformed into a powerful public resource.
Anastasia’s team is behind the Community Safety Data Portal, an initiative designed to make police data more accessible, transparent, and meaningful for residents.
Using Safe Software’s FME, the team automates the preparation of data behind the portal —applying privacy‑protective geomasking, validating records, and structuring data for public release.
These workflows ensure that information feeding the portal’s maps, dashboards, and downloads is consistent, up to date, and safe to share, allowing users to explore trends and access data without it being locked away in static reports.
Anastasia emphasizes that the goal is not just to share data, but to build trust and encourage community engagement. By making information easy to access and understand, the Ottawa Police Service is helping residents stay informed about what’s happening in their neighbourhoods.
Events like the FME Breakfast of Champions showcase how collaboration and technology can turn data into insight and insight into stronger, more connected communities.
