Ottawa Police Launch Community Incident Report to Keep Residents Informed

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is proud to announce the launch of its new Community Incident Report (CIR), a tool designed to keep residents informed about incidents that may affect their communities, with a focus on hate-motivated activity.

The Community Incident Report aims to bridge that gap by providing timely, relevant updates directly to residents.

“The nature of hate-motivated incidents is continually evolving. Our goal is to be transparent and proactive. That includes raising awareness of our approach to hate-motivated incidents.” says Chabine Tucker, Sergeant of Diversity Resource and Relations. “The OPS has taken steps to improve our response to these incidents. We want communities to know that we investigate these incidents thoroughly and that support is available. It’s important for residents to feel safe and informed.”

The report highlights actions taken by the Ottawa Police Service, such as investigating assaults, coordinating with partners to remove hateful graffiti in a timely manner, and engaging relevant units to address hate-motivated incidents, and laying charges where applicable. The Diversity and Resource Relations Unit also connects with impacted communities to provide assistance and reassurance.

By providing this information, the Ottawa Police Service aims to build trust, encourage open communication, and ensure every community member feels recognized and supported.

We have zero tolerance for hate or bias, and we encourage you to report incidents immediately. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and report any suspicious activity to help keep their communities and neighbourhoods safe.

The Community Incident Report is part of a broader effort by OPS to enhance communication, transparency, and community engagement.

Ottawa's Community Safety and Well-Being plan sets out how OPS works with community partners to improve the safety, health and well-being of Ottawa residents. The plan addresses local risks to safety and well-being at the community level in seven areas, including factors that drive hate-motivated incidents like discrimination, marginalization and racism. The goal of the plan is to create a sustainable community where everyone is safe, has a sense of belonging and has access to services, among other things. Find out more at ottawa.ca.

To report an incident to police, visit our online reporting tool or call 613-236-1222. Third-party reports are accepted for hate-related incidents, and all reports are reviewed within 24 hours.

Ottawa Victim Services (OVS) online Hate Crime Reporting Tool also offers a secure and confidential way for victims to report these incidents to OVS, enabling OVS to provide the necessary support and resources to those affected. In contacting OVS, you may be eligible for financial assistance, such as counselling coverage, graffiti removal, or home security items.

Keep an eye out for CIR posts on our social media accounts and visit ottawapolice.ca/CIR.
