Ottawa Police Reunite Stolen Bike with Owner Thanks to 529 Garage
When Acting Sergeant Sebastien Lemay and Constable Stephanie Lemieux from the Ottawa Police Service’s Community Policing were out on proactive patrol, a high-value bicycle leaning nearby caught their attention.
“I thought of running it through 529 Garage,” said Acting Sgt. Lemay. “And we had a hit—it was registered!”
The bike had been reported stolen just days earlier by its rightful owner, Alex Lima. He had locked it up at his workplace, as he always did, only to discover it gone without a trace.
“I’ve had a bike stolen before,” said Lima. “So when I bought this one, the staff at the shop told me to register it on 529 Garage right away. I'm so glad I listened.”
Technology Meets Tenacity
529 Garage is a free, community-driven bike registration and recovery system. Cyclists can register their bikes online or through the mobile app, adding serial numbers, descriptions, and photos. The service also offers tamper-proof stickers to help deter thieves and make recovered bikes easier to return. Law enforcement across Canada has increasingly embraced the platform as a valuable tool in combatting bike theft.
With Lima’s registration active, it took just a few minutes for Sgt. Lemay to pull up his contact information and call him directly. Together, they arranged a reunion at Lima’s workplace—the same spot where the theft had occurred.
A Bittersweet Return
The return of the bike came with gratitude, but also a quiet disappointment.
“I recently visited my father in Brazil,” Lima shared during the meeting. “He was in an accident and can’t ride anymore. He gave me his tool bag and a bike light—things that meant a lot to me. I’d attached them to this bike.”
But those sentimental items are gone, and can’t be replaced.
Cst. Lemieux acknowledged the deeper loss. “With a description of the items, we’ll keep an eye out when we revisit the area where the bike was found,” she said. “The sentimental value—that’s what makes theft feel more than just material loss.”
Standing Out to Stay Safe
Having learned from past experience, Lima has since turned his bike into a beacon of recognizability. Bright green add-ons, custom lights, a tracker, and several visible markers now make it stand out in any rack.
“If it ever goes missing again, someone will notice,” he said. “Hopefully, it won’t come to that.”
He expressed deep gratitude to the officers who acted quickly and with care.
“I’m so thankful,” Lima said. “The Ottawa Police didn’t just find my bike—they brought it back to me, at work, without delay.”
