Stronger Together: Sergeant MacNeil Steps Up for a Family in Need

Sergeant MacNeil Steps Up for a Family in Need

Sergeant Corey MacNeil, normally posted in Central but working an overtime shift in the West District, had encountered a young mother raising two small children and several pets in a one-bedroom apartment. The living conditions were heartbreaking: old food left out, bugs, and pet feces throughout the unit. It was clear the family was overwhelmed and struggling.

Sgt. MacNeil immediately began looking for ways to help.

Knowing that the Capital Prosperity Foundation (CPF) runs several programs for families in crisis, he reached out to see whether the mother could qualify for emergency support: grocery gift cards, temporary housing if needed, and the Make Your House a Home program to replace the furniture that could no longer be kept—something essential to making the home safe for the children again.

CPF partnered with Sgt. MacNeil: gift cards were quickly made available, the Emergency Stay program was activated, and a referral was initiated for Matthew House, a community organization that provides free furniture to families in need.

Later, Sgt. MacNeil shared something unexpected: he had already raised the necessary funds and would cover the cost of having the apartment professionally cleaned before the new furniture was moved in.

He also shared that helping the young mother had not been easy. She was hesitant, overwhelmed, and, in her distress, resistant to the support being offered. Many people might have stepped back at that point. Sgt. MacNeil didn’t. He remained determined to ensure this young family received the care and stability they deserved.

The furniture from Matthew House is still on its way, but the transformation has already begun: safer conditions, immediate food support, temporary housing options, and the reassurance that she is not alone.

This story isn’t about a single program or a single moment. It’s about the partnership of CPF, Matthew House, and the Ottawa Police Service working together. And it’s about one OPS member who refused to look the other way.

We are stronger together. You can link arms with us this holiday season by donating to CPF and the Matthew House.
