Three arrested in counterfeit currency investigation
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, June 15, 2026 1:54 p.m.
(Ottawa) — Three individuals have been charged following an investigation into the use of counterfeit Canadian currency in fraudulent online marketplace transactions.
Since March 2026, the Ottawa Police Service has received multiple reports of individuals using counterfeit banknotes to purchase legitimate items advertised on online platforms, including Facebook Marketplace. Reported items have included electronics, collectible cards, gold jewellery, and computer equipment. Multiple victims have reported losses totaling tens of thousands of dollars.
On June 13, 2026, at approximately 6 a.m., members of the Ottawa Police Tactical Unit, along with supporting units, executed a search warrant at a residence in the Parkwood Hills area in Ottawa’s west end.
Three individuals were located and arrested inside the residence. One individual attempted to flee before being taken into custody.
As part of the investigation, officers seized thousands of dollars in counterfeit currency believed to be connected to fraudulent online transactions. Officers also seized legitimate currency believed to be proceeds of crime.
During the search, officers recovered:
- Thousands of dollars in counterfeit and legitimate currency
- A quantity of stolen property
- Approximately 1.5 kilograms of marijuana
The accused, all from Ottawa, have been identified as:
- Ali QASEM, 29
- Hudie GHEZEL, 21
- Yassir FARAH, 18
Additional charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.
The Ottawa Police Service would like to thank the Ontario Provincial Police for their assistance in this investigation, including support related to a stolen e-bike believed to be connected to a fraudulent online transaction in Kemptville.

- Use safe trade zones
- Meet in well-lit, public locations
- Be cautious of cash transactions involving large sums
- Verify banknotes where possible, or request an eTransfer
