Welcome K9 Nelson to the Ottawa Police Service
The Ottawa Police Service is proud to welcome the newest member of our team: K9 Nelson.
This two-year-old black Labrador officially joined his handler, Roxana Manoiu, a dedicated Risk Navigator with the Victim Services Unit, on May 12, 2025.
Nelson just completed an intensive week of training in Cambridge with National Service Dogs, where he honed the skills he’ll need to support victims of intimate partner violence. His comforting presence will be a valuable resource for those in crisis. Nelson will sit with victims during risk assessments—offering quiet support and a soft paw when it’s needed most.
When he’s not hard at work, Nelson takes well-deserved breaks that include plenty of playtime, outdoor walks, and friendly visits with OPS staff at our central station. His cheerful personality and boundless affection have already made him a beloved companion among the team.
At home, Nelson lives with his two cat siblings, Abs and Lily, who are still adjusting to sharing space with such an enthusiastic little brother. He is always happy to share a cuddle or a tail-wagging hug—yes, he actually gives hugs!
Treats are a guaranteed way to his heart, just ask his secondary handler and OPS senior advisor Melanie Winwood.
Nelson will officially receive his badge at the upcoming badge ceremony on Friday, May 23, where he’ll be celebrated alongside new recruits joining the Ottawa Police Service.
Welcome to the team, K9 Nelson—we’re so lucky to have you!
