Canada-wide arrest warrant issued in Russell Heights homicide investigation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, February 20, 2026 3:05 p.m.  

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Homicide Unit has charged a 19-year-old Ottawa man in connection with the October 18, 2025, homicide of 21-year-old Raphael Atende. 

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Zakarye ABDI-JAMA, who is charged with second-degree murder. His whereabouts are currently unknown. 

We do not currently have a recent or clear photograph of ABDI-JAMA available for release. Should one become available, the Ottawa Police Service will share it on our website and social media channels.

Russell Heights homicide investigation: person to identify 

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is requesting the public's assistance in identifying a person of interest in the homicide investigation of 21-year-old Raphael Atende.

The homicide that occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday, October 18th, in the 1700 block of Russell Road.

The person of interest is known to frequent the Russell Heights Community. He is described as Black with a dark complexion, around nineteen to twenty-one years old and approximately 6’1” in height. 

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service Homicide Unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493.

Homicide investigation-stabbing in Russell Heights 

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service Homicide Unit is investigating the stabbing death of 21-year-old Raphael Atende that occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday October 18th in the 1700 block of Russell Road.

This is the fifteenth murder in Ottawa this year.
