Ottawa Police Service Reaffirms Support for 2SLGBTQQIA+ Communities

Ottawa – The Ottawa Police Service is deeply concerned by the tragic and deeply disturbing attack targeting the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community during Berlin's annual Pride celebrations. We recognize that violence directed at a community during an event intended to celebrate identity, inclusion and belonging can cause fear and distress well beyond the location where it occurred. We are mindful of the impact this will have on members of Ottawa’s 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities, particularly during times of celebration and community gathering.

To our 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities: we share in your concern and stand beside you.

Members of our Diversity and Resource Relations (DRR) Unit and Community Safety Services will be engaging with residents, community leaders, and partner organizations, while attending planned community events to connect, listen to, and provide support.

OPS has also directed frontline officers to proactively attend key community locations to enhance visibility, provide reassurance, and promote the safety and well-being of Ottawa's 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities.

We are working closely with Ottawa's 2SLGBTQQIA+ organizations and community partners to coordinate our efforts and ensure we remain responsive to community needs as preparations continue for the upcoming Pride Parade and related events.

Everyone should be able to gather, participate in Pride and express who they are safely and openly. We remain committed to ensuring that everyone can celebrate safely, openly, and without fear.

We will continue to assess community needs and adjust our policing presence as appropriate. Our goal is simple: to listen, support, and help everyone in Ottawa feel safe, respected, and secure.
