We take online reports for things that are NOT emergencies.
Some incidents require a police officer to be dispatched to take a report in person. Other reports can be taken by an agent in our Police Reporting Unit over the phone.
If this is a crime in progress or life-threatening emergency, call 911.
Hours of Operation
As of January 1, 2026, the Police Reporting Unit (PRU) hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m, seven days a week.

Online reports are taken for:
- Adding information to an existing report
- Drug complaint
- Fraud only if you have lost money (visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre for more information)
- Hate-motivated incident
- Lost property (with a visible serial number or distinct marking such as a custom engraving)
- Mischief or damage to property or a vehicle
- Theft (excluding theft of passports)
- Theft from a vehicle
- Traffic complaint

Did you know? Online reporting is available in over 15 languages in addition to French and English.
You CANNOT file a report online for:
- Stolen vehicles or stolen licence plates. Vehicle theft must be reported immediately so they can be entered into the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database as soon as possible. Please call the Police Reporting Unit at 613-236-1222, extension 7300.
- Threat(s), or violence. If you are in immediate danger, please dial 911. If you are no longer in danger, please call us at 613-236-1222, extension 7300.
- Evidence left on the scene, such as but not limited to blood, tools, clothes, or any item related to the incident. Please call 613-236-1222.
- An incident that did not happen in Ottawa. Please contact the police service in the place where the incident happened.
- A stolen passport. Stolen Canadian passports must be reported stolen to Passport Canada. Stolen Foreign passports must be reported in person at a police station.
- A lost cell phone, licence plate, bank card or government-issued identification, with or without a serial number. Please contact your service provider to get a replacement.
- A vehicle collision. If there are NO injuries from the collision, and the vehicle(s) is drivable, please attend one of our Collision Reporting Centres to file a police report. If the vehicle(s) is not drivable, call 613-236-1222 so we can assess what needs to happen next. We cannot take collision reports online due to the complexity of the information gathered and verified.
Filing a false report is a criminal offence.

After you submit a police report
Once you submit the report, you will receive a temporary reference number. After your report has been reviewed by an online agent, you will receive an official police report number. Our goal is to acknowledge online reports within 48 hours.
All information is valuable, but you may not hear from us. Here's why…
Due to the volume of reports received, you may not be contacted (e.g. a traffic complaint).
All the information you submit is captured and analyzed so resources can be allocated appropriately.

Can I report an incident that happened in another city?
Can I report a car accident / collision through this system?
No. Motor vehicle collision reporting information can be found on the Ottawa Police website.
Is there any cost associated with online reporting?
No. Submitting a report using the Online Reporting tool is free.
Will I still need to speak to an officer after I file an online report?
In most cases, no. However, an officer may contact you via email or phone if additional information is required for your report.
How secure is my personal information when reporting online?
We prioritize your privacy and security. All information is protected with the highest confidentiality standards, just as it would be at a police station.
Can I attach evidence, like photos or videos, to my report?
Yes, please ensure that the files are in PDF or JPEG formats.
What if I don’t get an email confirmation for my report?
Please check your spam or junk email folder first. If there's still no confirmation, it's possible an incorrect email address was provided in your online report. In such cases, you can resubmit your report with the correct email.
