117 km/h in a School Zone: Street Racing Driver Charged, Second Vehicle Sought

Ottawa — A 19-year-old man is facing a stunt driving charge after an East District Traffic Officer observed two vehicles racing through a Community Safety Zone near a school on Innes Road.
The incident took place yesterday during the noon hour while the officer was conducting speed enforcement in the posted 60 km/h zone on Innes Road, adjacent to Beatrice-Desloges Catholic High School. The officer observed two vehicles travelling eastbound at speeds exceeding 117 km/h.
The officer safely stopped one of the vehicles. The driver, a 19-year-old man with a G2 driver’s licence, was arrested and released at the scene. He has been charged with racing under Ontario’s stunt driving legislation. His licence was immediately suspended for 30 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
The second vehicle failed to stop for police and was last seen turning southbound onto Provence Avenue. The vehicle is described as a modified black newer-model sports car, possibly a BMW or similar style.
For a first-time conviction for stunt driving, drivers face a fine of not less than $2,000 and a minimum one-year licence suspension.
