ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau safety enforcement results: July 24-25

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, July 29, 2026  2:55 p.m.

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service (OPS), together with City of Ottawa enforcement partners, continued targeted safety and enforcement activities in the ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau area on Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25.

Throughout the weekend, officers maintained a visible presence, conducted proactive patrols and engaged with residents, visitors and businesses.

The initiative resulted in:

·         34 alcohol interventions

·         14 licensed establishment walkthroughs

·         18 public interactions

·         8 traffic stops

·         20 by-law infractions

·         15 verbal warnings and educational interactions

·         3 Provincial Offence Notices issued

·         2 arrests

The arrests involved individuals taken into custody for public intoxication and trespass-related offences.

During one licensed establishment walkthrough, officers identified overcrowding concerns. The matter was referred to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) for further action.

OPS will continue working with City and provincial enforcement partners throughout the summer to support a safe environment for residents, visitors, businesses and frontline workers in the ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau area.

Through visible patrols, proactive enforcement and ongoing collaboration, the Market Safety Initiative continues to focus on addressing crime and disorder while supporting a vibrant and welcoming downtown core.
