Crime Prevention Week: Protecting Ontario Together

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, November 2, 2026, 1 p.m.

(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is proud to join police services across the province in recognizing Crime Prevention Week, running from November 1st to November 7th, 2026.

Aligned with this year’s provincial theme, "Protecting Ontario Together," Crime Prevention Week highlights the important role we all play in creating safer communities. Police, residents, businesses, schools and community organizations each have a part to play in recognizing risks, taking preventative action and looking out for one another.

Prevention takes many forms. It can mean securing a home or vehicle, protecting personal and financial information from fraud, recognizing suspicious activity, or making use of the many Crime Prevention programs that the Ottawa Police has to offer.

"Protecting our city isn't something police can do in isolation, it takes a synchronized effort from every corner of our community," said Sergeant Barmak Anvari of the Ottawa Police Service Crime Prevention Unit. "By highlighting 'Protecting Ontario Together', we are reminding residents that safety starts with looking out for one another and working hand-in-hand with local law enforcement to keep Ottawans safe."

Taking Proactive Steps to Protect Yourself and Your Community

Crime prevention is a shared responsibility. Residents and business owners are encouraged to incorporate proactive safety measures into their daily routines:

  • Home and Business Security: Ensure doors, windows, sheds, and garages are always securely locked. Install adequate outdoor lighting, motion sensors, and reliable security or surveillance cameras where appropriate.
  • Vehicle Safety: Keep valuables out of sight and remember to lock your vehicle when leaving it unattended.
  • Personal Vigilance: Stay aware of your surroundings, particularly when walking alone or in unfamiliar areas at night.
  • Digital and Financial Safety: Be cautious of unsolicited phone calls, text messages, and emails requesting personal or financial information. Verify identities independently before sharing sensitive data.
