Market Safe enforcement continues in ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, September 2, 2026  10:40 a.m. 

Ottawa — The Ottawa Police Service (OPS), together with its enforcement partners, continued targeted Market Safe operations in the ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau areas on August 28 and 29.

Over the two-day period, officers and partners conducted:

  • 14 traffic stops;
  • 2 arrests, including one for public intoxication and one involving a wanted individual;
  • 23 alcohol interventions;
  • 2 Provincial Offence Notices, including one under the Liquor Licence and Control Act and one under the Highway Traffic Act;
  • 42 parking-related by-law offence notices; and
  • more than 10 inspections and walkthroughs of businesses and other locations in the area.

Market Safe operations combine visible police presence, targeted enforcement and collaboration with City and community partners to address behaviours and activities contributing to crime, disorder and public safety concerns in the downtown core.

OPS and its partners will continue conducting targeted enforcement and proactive patrols in the ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau areas.
