Theft from vehicles

Be aware of factors that might make your vehicle vulnerable to thieves and vandals.

  • Don't leave personal identification, vehicle registration or insurance certificates, or credit cards in your vehicle.
  • Keep valuables and shopping bags from view. This includes loose change, tablets and phones.
  • Never leave your vehicle running and unattended.
  • Always close windows all the way and lock the doors.
  • Park in well-lit areas with pedestrian traffic. Park your vehicle facing the street. Anyone tampering with it is more likely to be seen.
  • Engrave your vehicle registration numberon wheel rims, tools, etc.
  • Don't hide spare keys in your vehicle — they can be found. And never put your name or address on your house or car keys.
  • If you have a garage, use it. Lock both the vehicle and garage.
  • Consider installing anti-theft devices.

Report It!

If you have been a victim of vehicle-related theft, and even if there is no damage to your vehicle, please report it. This helps us to track patterns and allocate police resources.

All Valuables Removed

Get an All Valuables Removed warning card designed to remind vehicle owners that you have an active part to play in crime prevention.

The cards are displayed by vehicle owners on the inside of the driver's side window to display the message, All Valuables Removed—letting would-be-thieves know not to bother searching the vehicle and alerting others to take the same precautions.

Warning cards are available at Community Police Centres, police stations, or by email.

Throughout the year, you might also see our volunteers or police officers handing out the cards or placing them on vehicles as one of our Crime Prevention initiatives.

We would like to extend a special thanks to the  Edmonton Police Service, who first started the All Valuables Removed campaign.

Identity theft
Identity fraud happens when criminals use stolen personal information. It is often used to commit another crime. Find out more from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
Package theft

Home delivery is more popular than ever.

Follow these tips to ensure your packages get to their intended recipient!

  • If you can't be home for deliveries, opt for in-store or curbside pick-up.
  • Request packages to be held at the post office for you to pick up when convenient.
  • Track your deliveries online to get their arrival time so you can be home to receive them.
  • Request packages to be left out of sight, like behind a bush or at a side entrance that can't be seen by someone going by.
  • Select the ‘signature required' delivery option, so if you aren't home, the package won't be left unattended.
  • If your employer allows, have packages delivered to your place of work.

Report suspicious activity in your neighbourhood. If you see someone checking homes, either on foot or slowly driving by in a vehicle, or following a delivery van, call the police immediately at 613-236-1222, so we can respond.

If a package is missing from your home, contact the shipping company. If you think the package was stolen, please make a police report.
