FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, June 30, 2026  1:40 p.m.

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) and its enforcement partners were out in the ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau area on Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27, as part of this summer’s Community Safety Initiatives.

The initiative is part of an enhanced police presence planned for the ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau area this summer, with officers and partners working together to address disorderly conduct, support local businesses and residents, and improve public safety.

Enforcement results

  • 67 by-law infractions
  • 20 alcohol interventions
  • 16 inspections/walkthroughs
  • 12 traffic stops
  • 8 Provincial Offence Notices
  • 1 arrest on an outstanding warrant

Officers also addressed traffic-related issues, including cellphone use, seatbelt violations, expired plates, excessive noise, and passengers hanging from vehicle windows. Several verbal warnings were issued, and officers continued to educate drivers where appropriate.

During inspections and walkthroughs with enforcement partners, two unlicensed security guards were identified and charged by provincial regulatory officials.

About the Community Safety Initiative

Officers from Frontline and Neighbourhood Resource Teams work in partnership with OC Transpo, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, and the City of Ottawa’s By-law and Regulatory Services.

These teams take a firm stance against disorderly conduct, including violations of the Liquor Licence and Control Act, criminal behaviour, and activities that diminish public safety and can negatively impact the community and local businesses.
