Charges laid after observant members of the public call 911

(Ottawa) — On Friday evening, June 12th, 2026, members of the public noticed a person in the food court of a local downtown mall concealing what they believed was a handgun. Several people called 911, and members of the Ottawa Police Service immediately responded.
An 18-year-old male was located and arrested inside the food court. A replica firearm and knife were located and seized by Officers. No members of the public were injured in this incident.
Jad Ghanem of Ottawa has been charged with 2 counts of carrying a concealed weapon, and one count each of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, causing a disturbance and breach of probation. He attended court today and remains in custody.
The Ottawa Police Service continues to encourage all members of the public who see something concerning to call 911.
