OPS targets unsafe and aggressive driving during #ResidentsMatter enforcement

Ottawa — The Ottawa Police Service Road Safety Unit, along with the East District Traffic Unit, conducted targeted traffic enforcement across the city on Friday evening, October 2, as part of its ongoing #ResidentsMatter initiative focused on unsafe and aggressive driving.

Police continue to monitor vehicle gathering locations across the city to address unsafe driving, nuisance behaviour and other concerns raised by residents.

In total, 31 Provincial Offence Notices were issued for a range of traffic offences, including speeding, unsafe lane changes, distracted driving, plate offences, equipment violations and other Highway Traffic Act offences.

Additionally, there were 11 Part 3 Court Summons issued which compels the driver to attend court. 

Four drivers were charged with stunt driving following stops at various locations across Ottawa:

  • Innes Road at Page Road: A 20-year-old man was observed travelling 113 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. He was charged with stunt driving, speeding and failing to stop for an amber light.
  • Jockvale Road near Greenbank Road: A 51-year-old man was observed travelling 109 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. He was charged with stunt driving and speeding. 
  • Highway 416 southbound at Fallowfield Road: A 20-year-old man was observed travelling 154 km/h in a 110 km/h zone. He was charged with stunt driving, speeding and failing to display a plainly visible licence plate. 
  • Strandherd Drive at Fraser Fields Way: A 22-year-old man was observed travelling 117 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. He was charged with stunt driving, speeding and failing to surrender an insurance card. 

Each of the four drivers had their licence suspended for 30 days, their vehicles impounded for 14 days, and must attend court. They face fines of $2000 to $10,000, a further one – to three – year driver’s licence suspension, and a possible six months in jail, upon conviction. 

Road safety remains a priority for the Ottawa Police Service, and our officers will continue to respond to community concerns and target dangerous and unsafe driving.
