Proactive Enforcement Efforts Lead to Multiple Arrests in Separate ByWard Market Incidents
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, August 25, 2026 10:50 a.m.
(Ottawa) — On August 21, 2026, Central Neighbourhood Resource Team (NRT) officers and Community Outreach and Response Engagement (CORE) officers were conducting a proactive enforcement initiative in the George Street and Cumberland Street area. The initiative focused on addressing public disorder, violence, open alcohol consumption and drug related activities, following numerous community complaints.
During the initiative, officers intervened in two separate incidents resulting in multiple arrests and charges.
Assault with a Weapon Arrest
At approximately 3:30 p.m., officers observed two males engaged in a physical altercation. During the incident, one male produced a knife and attempted to assault the victim. After missing, the suspect picked up a piece of furniture and threw it, striking the victim in the face.
NRT and CORE officers intervened immediately and arrested the suspect without further incident. Ottawa Paramedic Service attended the scene to treat the victim for minor injuries.
A 30‑year‑old male has been charged with:
- Assault with a weapon
- Possess a weapon dangerous to the public peace
- Unlawfully possess a Schedule I substance
The accused was held for a show‑cause hearing.
Drug Trafficking Arrests
At approximately 4:45 p.m., officers observed two individuals exhibiting behaviour consistent with drug trafficking in the same area. Both were arrested for possession for the purpose of trafficking. One suspect attempted to flee and was arrested.
A substantial quantity of crack cocaine and methamphetamine was seized during a search incident to arrest. Both suspects were transported to cells.
A 24‑year‑old female and a 26‑year‑old male have each been charged with:
- Possession of a Schedule I substance X2
- Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime not exceeding $5,000
The Ottawa Police Service will continue proactive enforcement and outreach in the Market area to address community concerns and enhance public safety.
