South District traffic initiative results in 41 provincial offence notices
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, October 19, 2026 11:50 a.m.
Ottawa — The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) conducted a proactive traffic enforcement and community engagement initiative in the South District on October 16 and 17, resulting in 41 provincial offence notices (PONs) and more than 40 traffic stops.
Members of the South Neighbourhood Resource Team (NRT) focused their efforts on Barrhaven, Findlay Creek, Riverside South and high-traffic intersections along the Hunt Club corridor, both east and west. Particular attention was given to roadways identified as community priorities, including concerns raised by residents in Findlay Creek.
During the initiative, officers issued 41 PONs and searched four vehicles in relation to concerns involving cannabis and/or liquor.
Offences identified included:
- Distracted driving and the use of a hand-held device
- Driving with cannabis or liquor readily available
- Obstructed licence plates
- Disobeying stop signs
- Improperly coloured or coated windows and windshields
- Driving without a valid permit
- Failing to surrender proof of insurance
In light of recent traffic-related fatalities and ongoing concerns about unsafe driving, the initiative focused on both enforcement and meaningful community engagement.
Officers took the opportunity to speak directly with drivers and passengers about safe driving practices, the consequences of unsafe behaviour behind the wheel, and the shared responsibility everyone has in keeping Ottawa's roads safe.
Officers appreciated the positive interactions with residents and the opportunity to have meaningful conversations about road safety and broader neighbourhood concerns.
Road safety remains a shared responsibility. The Ottawa Police Service encourages all road users to remain attentive, obey traffic laws and make safe choices every time they travel.
Through proactive enforcement and community engagement, OPS will continue working with residents to address local concerns and promote safer roads throughout Ottawa.
