Meet Kelly Fontil — a master tailor whose craftsmanship has quietly supported the Ottawa Police Service for decades.
Originally from Haiti, Kelly joined his mother in Canada in 1984. One day, walking through the ByWard Market, he stopped into Mendel Good’s tailor store, and struck up a conversation with owner. That conversation changed his life. Mr. Good offered him a job.
The moment Cst. Fern John-Simon stepped into Dr. F.J. McDonald School, a positive impact was felt.
The invitation came after a teacher saw her on television and immediately reached out, asking her to be a Black History Month guest of honour.
The Ottawa Police Service proudly hosted another successful Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Ontario, with members, community partners, and supporters coming together in a show of courage and community spirit.
Thanks to the generosity of participants, donors and sponsors, this year’s event raised more than $63,000 for Special Olympics Ontario and its athletes and families across the province.

(Ottawa) —The Ottawa Police Service invites the community to join us for the 2026 Polar Plunge for Special Olympics, taking place Saturday, February 21, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa, an exciting new venue and proud community partner of this year’s event.
The Ottawa Police Service joined residents at Jules Morin Park over the Family Day long weekend for the annual Lowertown Winter Fest, organized by the Lowertown Community Resource Centre.
The community enjoyed a full afternoon of winter fun, including inflatable structures for kids, hot chocolate, and a friendly hockey game on the outdoor rink.
I have lived and worked in Alberta and Australia before settling in Ottawa, and I have spent the past 15 years working in the social services field.
Prior to joining the Ottawa Police Service, I worked closely with Ottawa’s Indigenous population involved in the criminal justice system.
Born and raised in Ottawa, I am proud to be a Franco-Ontarian.
Throughout my career, I have worked in several OPS units, including Police Communications (911 Dispatch), Front Desk Services, and Investigative Support within the Missing Persons and Intimate Partner Violence Units.
