Chorus

The genesis of the Ottawa Police Chorus in 1972 was driven by the vision of Chief Leo Seguin to have a chorus available to perform at funerals and police functions. Initially, the Chorus was made up of male officers actively serving, with the sole criteria for membership being the enjoyment of singing.

Over the years, the face of the Chorus has changed as membership was opened to welcome both genders of serving and retired officers, civilian police personnel, as well as members of the community. Today the Chorus, numbering 43 people, reflects the multicultural community served by the Ottawa Police Service. We celebrate the ongoing, active participation of three of the original members - our own Three Tenors!

Our mission is to enhance the image of the Ottawa Police Service through song. To accomplish this goal, the Chorus is privileged to sing at an assortment of large and small events each year. Cultural events, entertainment at Retirement Homes, concerts, and Christmas parties in the community comprise an interesting, varied and busy schedule. We are proud to join members of the Ottawa Police Service at their community and service award ceremonies.

We are never more privileged than when we stand with other Police Choruses from across Canada on the steps of Parliament Hill every September to honour the sacrifice of fallen officers at the National Police Memorial. The Memorial, which began in 1978, continues today with 150 singers joining their voices in a show of respect alongside thousands of police and guests. The Ottawa Police Chorus is privileged to serve as organizers of the chorus segment of the programme.

The Chorus sings in four-part harmony, singing a varied repertoire of classical, popular and jazz, - some challenging and all rewarding. We are fortunate to have Geoff Linklater as our Director and Carol Gurofsky as our Accompanist. Both are very talented and extensively trained musicians.

Individuals who are experienced singers (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) and with some prior choir experience, are invited to attend rehearsals and participate in the audition process. For further information, please reach us by email at opchorusonline@gmail.com or 613-236-1222, ext. 6187.
