Positive Impact: 100 Good News Stories
Our Ottawa began as a simple but meaningful initiative. We wanted to tell more of the impactful stories happening across our city—stories of connection, compassion, and community. Today, we celebrate not only the stories themselves but the transformations they’ve sparked: improved conversations, strengthened community relationships, and an honest recognition that we all have more in common than we sometimes think.
Throughout the year, we told stories of officers who showed up for children, bringing joy to a difficult night at the hospital (Cst. Liu and Jack) and amplifying awareness of their courageous battle (Held by Heroes: Jack’s Battle Against ALD).
We shared moments where routine patrol turned into extraordinary rescue missions, with first responders saving many lives. (Two OPS officers help save nine family members in carbon monoxide tragedy)
We wrote about the richness of our diversity and the unique culture officers bring to serving the community. (Cst. Puneet Deol | Sikh Heritage Month)
We showed the many ways we’ve partnered with the Capital Prosperity Foundation to support our community—delivering car seats for newborns in newcomer families, furniture to those in need, gift cards for groceries and essential items, and more.
We presented crime prevention tips, initiatives, and events to keep everyone informed and working together to make our community safer.
We introduced and celebrated the incredible members, units, and positions that make up OPS—from dispatchers, new recruits, constables, sergeants to detectives and superintendents; from women in policing to children following in their parents’ footsteps; from civilian members to special constables, sworn officers and four-legged partners; and from specialized units like the data team to the emergency services unit.
We shared selfless actions of officers on duty (Little Witnesses, Big Impact: Community Youth Unit Turns Fear into Friendship at Ottawa Daycare), off duty (Always ready: off-duty officer saves a man's life), and the little moments in between—celebrating community partnerships and joy, from hockey games to Special Olympics events.
We saw community generosity multiply—purses filled for women in need, cruisers crammed with food donations, and our Airport Unit taking part in sending kids off to Disney World. We’ve watched people rally together to help vulnerable neighbours, transforming simple gestures into lasting impacts.
We worked alongside Indigenous communities to advance reconciliation at OPS—from the meaningful gift of the Jingle Dress to launching our reconciliation webpage, introducing a new role specifically advising on the support of indigenous women and girls, and hosting the very first Indigenous recruiting event.
These are the stories that remind us that kindness wins. That humanity is stronger than division. That when good things happen, we find common ground, no matter our background or beliefs.
All of our good news stories can be found on our social media pages and the Our Ottawa section of our website: Our Ottawa - Ottawa Police Service.
What has been most inspiring is the response. The shift. The positivity reflected back in messages, community conversations, and the broader media landscape. The measurable, quantifiable data and analytics behind the positive impact of telling these stories. As we continue putting time, intention, and heart into highlighting the great work happening at OPS, the community has met that effort with openness and trust. It’s proof that storytelling can shape relationships and build bridges.
So here’s to the 100 good news stories we’ve shared—and to the next 100, because there is still a lot of work to do.
Thank you for reading, for engaging, and for believing in the impact of good news. And a special thanks to the Ottawa Police Service members, Community Policing Officers, the corporate communications department, the media relations departments and every community member who made this possible.
Wishing you and your loved ones a warm, safe, and joyful holiday season.
